Oh my, oh gee...

Everything has a faint aroma of kitten pee!

Sorry there's no pictures today. I've got a whack that I've taken on my phone again - I just have to load them up to the computer. The Nikon has been sitting in the basement all week, so I've been lazy about getting it out for pictures.

But I am here to note that it seems our little Trin is having a lot of "accidents" around the house. We only have the one litter box in the basement (two-story house + the basement), so she finds little places to relieve herself on the two upper floors. The first was my down-duvet, then my cloth grocery bags in the closet, a box with shoes that wasn't unpacked yet, and now on the curtains/carpet in our bedroom. And goodness knows where else. I know the remedy is to add litter boxes on the two upper floors, but... ugh, then I'm dealing with cleaning three litter boxes... plus the added litter around the house and having to find spots for it. The house already has a faint smell of the accidents, but I know it would be a way worse smell if I put litter boxes all over the house.

I know I don't have many readers out there anymore, but for anyone out there, I'd love some suggestions if you have them! It's been 18 years since I had a kitten (that wasn't a foster) that had free reign of the house. I know she's going to eventually grow out of it and manage the one box downstairs -- but for now.. the cleanups are pretty yucky! And of course I don't want Drew to discover them before I do! (double eww!)

I know I said I had no pictures, but I loaded this one (kinda crappy quality) from my phone to Facebook earlier today.

Both having their snacks together on the floor.
They really have a love/hate relationship. One is always bugging the other one, just like kids do. But then they have these moments where you can see they're going to grow up to be the best of friends, and it's sooo cute. :)

  1. You need to have litter boxes all over because kittens are like toilet training toddlers, they play and they play and then they realize they HAVE TO GO NOW!!

at least one on each floor is important. If it doesn't do the trick then a few on each floor. I know you've got a little one and this doesn't seem ideal but it is far better then finding 'accidents'

  2. Ho hum. I am very much in agreement with you. As much as I don't want to be! I'll have to think about the best way to go about it, if it's going to be my only option. Even just adding one to the top floor may help. I just need to keep the little guy away from it for now, so it's tough to figure out where to put them. He's in a "grab everything and put it in my mouth stage" right now :P Her current litterbox room has a cat door, so it's easy to keep him out of it.
But thanks for your input! I'll do some thinking about it. :)

  3. I was just reading your comment reply and that is so cool that the kitty litter room has a cat door! Ah yes. Little surprises for you here and there. Not enjoyable. I am wondering, does kitty have free reign of the house at night? Is it an option to lock her in the kitty litter room at night? That way, she really gets used to her kitty litter room and is comfortable in there? Hmmmm... other than that I'm not sure!

    Good luck!

  4. Have you had her checked by your vet? If she is truly fully litterbox trained, there may be a medical reason for her inappropriate elimination.
If it is that she is just being stubborn about not taking time out to go downstairs for her litter break, then the option mentioned above of additional litterboxes is the way to go.
    Good luck!

  5. Such a cute picture of the two young ones! :)

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure you're going to have to put some additional litter boxes on the upper two floors ... sorry! Could you maybe keep the kitten confined to one room?

  6. Yep, adding litterboxes is the thing to do -- or she may never become properly house-trained if she decides it's okay to eliminate in the other spots she's chosen! (Which would create a much worse odor problem than just having the extra catboxes on each floor.) To keep Drew from being tempted to stick his hands in, covers that clip down onto the base sound essential. I'd also turn the catbox opening toward the wall, leaving enough space so Trin can get in easily but not enough that Drew can fit back there to reach inside.

  7. I agree with the extra litter boxes but I would diffently check with your vet. Any time I have had problems it has been due to illnes. I do have 4 litter boxes for the boys but they were added after a illness and the vet said more litter boxes... pam
